All good things…

Sadly must eventually come to an end.  No - this isn’t the end of Kalan’s Korner (hell I’ve only just STARTED things again!)  Rather, Savage May has come to an end.  And what a month it was too…I don’t think I’ve ever been so busy with Digital Adventures releases in a long time.

So what the heck was this Savage May (for the benefit of those of you who don’t follow FGII and/or Savage Worlds news)?  Well long story short - it was basically a month long event commemorating the launch of Savage Worlds Online, as well as the massive update to Digital Adventures’ Savage Worlds Ruleset.  May also saw the release of a LOT of Savage Worlds goodness for use in FGII (to the tune of four Savage Tales and two full Plot Point campaigns).  As I’m the Savage Worlds Project Co-ordinator at DA, there was a lot of hair pulling and sweat to make sure all our releases were ready to go.  On the whole though, I think it turned out pretty good.

I also managed to run several demo sessions of the Savage Worlds Ruleset for a number of people, all of whom seemed to thoroughly enjoy their sessions.  If you’re reading this, and would like to have a demo session, or a “How To” type session, please check out these few posts on the SWO forums for more information:  Hours of Operation, Limited Time Offer, and Savage Worlds Demos.

DA also ran a promotion wherein if you purchased any Savage Worlds FGII product during the month of May, you were entered into a draw for a copy of The Savage World of Solomon Kane  from Pinnacle Entertainment Group (the links MAY be broken by the time this post goes up, as PEG is going through some website overhauls).  This book is quite simply the most beautiful RPG book to come out in a long time.  Its also up for an Origins award this year too!

Look to this post on the SWO forums for who actually won the lovely book!

So all in all - this past week has been pretty busy, but in a good kind of way.  Since the last post I have received one of my new pairs of glasses :D  I have to say, I really like them - still getting used to the whole bifocal thing, but all in all I’ve been happy with them!  Still waiting on my sunglasses to come in though…so no pics just yet, although if you have me as an MSN or GTalk contact you’ll catch a glimpse ;)

This past week has also seen a few “firsts” for me here in Denmark as well.  Last Monday I made the trek, and was finally able to get my own library card!  Which is nice - especially given how expensive books are here.  Granted - not a whole lot in the way of selection for english novels, but there’s enough to keep me busy for a while (right now I’m FINALLY catching up on the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin).  This was actually quite an accomplishment to be honest - as english is not widely spoken in public here…so trying to explain what it was I was after using my poor Danish skills was interesting.  I have to admit though - these past couple of months I’ve noticed a dramatic improvement in my ability to hold a conversation in Danish, which has really impressed my beloved, and many of our friends.  So I’m thrilled about that!

Also this past Saturday saw the relaunch of my Shaintar campaigns.  It was a blast!  I really think this new series is going to go really well, especially if the level of roleplay and dialogue continues like it did.  I hope to have a synopsis of the session up later this week.  It should really prove interesting I think - however now I have to get my rear in gear and map out the city the group is currently in.  Thankfully I just picked up Profantasy’s City Designer Pro program to help out with that - although I wish the v3 of the program would come out…but it’ll do the trick I’m sure.  With luck (and the blessings of the Talisman folks), I may post any of the maps I do, so stay tuned for that!

Today will also mark another big first for me.  I actually have to go see a doctor here :S  I’ve been having some problems with my one foot for the past while, and its gotten to the point where its been really painful to walk…bleh…I don’t like going to the doc at the best of times ;)  So I’ll not only be putting my Danish to the test (although by law if I recall right, if I request service in English they have to oblige), but I’ll also have my first taste of the Danish medical system…which should be interesting.

But I think I’ve gone and rambled on long enough.  Later this week I hope to have the first in my “GM University” posts up - wherein I’ll go into a little detail on what all a GM should know to use FG, problems you’re bound to face.  While this will mostly be geared towards using the Savage Worlds Ruleset, hopefully others will find some of it useful.  I’m still taking requests on topics you’d like me to write about - so please send them in!

Ciao for now gang!  And see you at the table!

  2. English is not widely spoken in Denmark? Aside from an official English-speaking country, I can’t imagine a place where it’s more widely spoken.

Most Danes respond quite polity to “Ever so sorry, but my Danish isn’t to good. Do you speak English?”

  3. Ok - they won’t speak English right off the bat then let me rephrase ;) You’re right though that if you are polite and ask for them to speak in English, most are happy to do so - providing they are under the age of 50 in my experience so far.

But also in my experience - if you attempt to speak in Danish, even though you’re not a native, you will get FAR better service and assistance (although this is true in most any country in which English is not the native tongue).
